Wednesday 31st August 2016 – Transfer Deadline Day!
9:15 – Deadline Day has started with a bang, as Stoke Loud and Proud were able to get photographic evidence of Bruno Martins Indi arriving at Clayton Wood for his medical. The Dutch defender looks to be a replacement for Phillip Wollscheid, who looks like he is on his way out of the club, with Wolfsburg interested in the German.
9:20 – This morning just gets better and better, as Sky Sports report that Wilfried Bony is Stoke to complete a loan deal. The Ivorian has been linked with numerous clubs this window, but it seems that he has chosen Stoke. His cryptic tweet this morning got people wondering, and thankfully it seems like we finally have gotten ourselves a striker!
9:25 – To back up Sky Sports, ever reliable John Percy [@JPercyTelegraph], has confirmed that Bony will join Stoke on loan, for a fee of £2m. Whether or not the loan will be for the season or not, he is unsure, but it looks like it is going to be that way!
9:30 – News coming in thick and fast, as Philipp Wollscheid is apparently set to join Wolfsburg, according to Twitter user @PhilipHarmeling. The defender is apparently already in in town in Germany, and is just waiting for confirmation from both clubs. Take this one with a pinch of salt, as the source is not the finest, but the move seems very much on for Wolly.
10:00 – An odd one this, as 33-year-old goalkeeper Lee Grant has been pictured at the training ground today, ahead of what we presume is a medical. This is odd, as at his age, he isn’t going to compete for a first team spot, and Given is already solid back-up for Butland. We will have to see how this one transpires.
10:25 – Some interesting news to cover, as Guillem Balague has reported that our little magician Bojan has been the centre of attention for most clubs, with 6 clubs interested in the Spaniard. Those teams are Celta, Real Sociedad, Valencia, Celtic, Guangzhou Evergrande, Shanghai Greenland. Thankfully, Balague has assured Stoke fans that Bojan will be staying put, which says a lot about his loyalty towards the club. There is obviously a special bond between Bo and the supporters, and everyone took to him very quickly. With rumours of Muniesa leaving, it is hard to imagine life without the Spanish duo, so we hope to see them both at the club for many years to come.
10:45 – Another strange one, as Victor Anichebe has been linked with a move to The Potters by The Daily Mail. Anichebe, who is a free agent after being released by West Brom, is being targeted by both us and Hull. I don’t think there is too much in this rumour, as he is not better than what we already have, and with Bony coming in, he’d be even further down the pecking order. It would, however, be decent back-up, I guess, for both cup matches and for when there are injuries in the side. After managing only 9 goals for The Baggies in 61 games, Stoke fans will be hoping that he’s not the only striker coming in.
11:05 – Yesterday, the Berahino deal looked very much on, as Stoke Loud and Proud announced we’d put in another bid for the striker, and West Brom were set to target Ighalo from Watford. But things look to have taken a turn for the worse, as The Daily Mail report that the West Brom hierarchy do not expect to sell the striker, as of this morning. This does not mean a move won’t happen, because anything can happen to change their minds, but it is looking very unlikely that we will be signing Berahino this transfer window unfortunately. Maybe Hughes knew that enough was enough with the deal, and that is why Bony is on his way. What we want t know is, who out of two strikers named would you have preferred at the club right now, Bony or Berahino? Make sure to tell us either on Facebook or Twitter!
11:30 – The Sentinels Martin Spinks has offered an update on both the Martins Indi and Bony deal. According to them, the club is expecting no problems completing the loan signing of Wilfried Bony, which will be for the season for a fee of £2m. However, the Martins Indi deal is taking longer than expected because of complications with his current club Porto. Both deals will have a view to a permanent transfer if they impress.
11:30 – Apart from the incoming, there is also some news on possible departures from The Sentinel. They both however rely on Martins Indi and Bony coming in. Wollscheid looks to be set for a season-long loan to Wolfsburg, and Joselu is set to leave for Deportivo de La Coruna in Spain.
11:45 – It has been reported that club photographer Phil Grieg has arrived at Clayton Wood, which could mean a signing is set to be announced..
12:15 – One down, two to go! Stoke have announced the signing of Derby keeper Lee Grant on loan until January!
Lee Grant Fact File
The 33-year-old veteran has become our first Deadline Day signing, but a lot of people don’t know too much about him.
Grant, as said before, is a goalkeeper, and has been brought in until January. Without jumping to conclusions, this could be because either Butland is out for longer than expected, or just that they want to have better back-up in case our number one was to get injured again in the future.
Starting his career at Derby, he would return to The Rams 6 years later after spells at Burnley, Oldham, Sheff Wednesday, and Burnley once again. He has also represented England at U16 all the way to U21 level.
It is obvious that he has the experience, so he could be a valuable acquisition as back-up, but with Shay Given, who is equally as experienced, currently our back-up of choice, it is hard to see where Grant would fit. Regardless, a signing is a signing and it is great to have him at the club. If he does have the opportunity to impress, hopefully he takes it and show the fans why he was brought in.
13:00 – The second signing of the window, and it is a big one! Stoke have announced the signing of Manchester City striker Wilfried Bony!

13:30 – Social media is going wild over the signing of Wilfried Bony, with many still in shock that we’ve made such a signing, relatively out of nowhere. Apart from this however, not much else has happened regarding other transfers to the club. We are still awaiting the confirmation of the signing of Bruno Martins Indi, which at this point seems inevitable, but we won’t be sure until we see him holding up a red and white shirt.
13:45 – He only signed less than an hour ago, but Wilfried Bony is set to feature in a behind the closed doors match against Birmingham City today. We’re hoping he makes an instant impact with the coaching staff.
13:50 – With all the arrivals happening, we’re forgetting about the potential departures. Charlie Adam is one that could make his way out of Stoke, according to @Iandennisbbc. The midfielder has been linked heavily to a move to Burnley throughout the window.
14:05 – The friendly between Stoke and Birmingham has now finished, and The Potters unfortunately lost 3-1. New signing Wilfried Bony did hit the bar however, which is a very positive sign!
14:10 – The Berahino saga finally seems to have finished, as @DeanJonesBR reports that he is set to remain at West Brom until January. He says that the club blocked a move away at a late stage, and now Saido and his agent will plan to see what they will do in January.
14:35 – To further the Charlie Adam news, we said earlier that he could be leaving, but it has now been said that Stoke gave rejected ‘a couple of offers’ from other other Premier League teams. Whether you like Adam or not, he is a game-changer when he comes on the field, so you can understand why Hughes might want to hold onto him. But at the same time, he just isn’t going to get the guaranteed game time that he’d get elsewhere. It will be interesting to see where he will end up come the end of the day.
14:40 – Some more news on a possible arrival, but this one is for the youth side, as the deal to bring Harry Soutter to the club is looking good. @Kenny_Millar says everything is agreed in principle, and that the club is just waiting on clearance.
15:00 – There has been one departure today, as Sky Sports in Germany have confirmed that Phillip Wollscheid has left the club on a season long loan to Wolfsburg. We wish him all the best this season, and hope he comes back even better!
15:05 – With one defender out, you have to imagine that one will be coming in very soon. As long as there are no major complications, expect the announcement of a certain centre-back happening soon..
15:20 – It’s been confirmed that the Wollscheid deal will have an option to buy at the end of the loan deal. So this could well be the last we see of Wolly at Stoke City!
15:30 – Percy has confirmed it. Wollscheid is set to leave to Wolfsburg today, and also Joselu is expected to join Deportivo, although it is unsure if this would be on loan or permanent. It will be sad to see Joselu leave if this is true, mostly because he never got the proper opportunity to showcase his skills consistently, and fell victim to Hughes not knowing who his best striker was. All the chopping and changing did not help his Stoke career, but he did show that he has the ability to be a top striker for the club. Unfortunately, with Bony arriving, starts would have been even more limited, and with Deportivo selling their main striker in Perez to Arsenal yesterday, the move seems to make sense one both parts.
15:55 – News seems to be slowing down now as we eagerly await the potential signing of Martins Indi. But there’s a picture going around that would suggest that we have signed another player. This is a warning, do not be fooled like a majority of on Stoke fans have been, as there is a picture of Kagawa from Dortmund holding a Stoke shirt going around Twitter. Unfortunately, this is a photoshopped image, the biggest hint is that he’s holding the 2014/15 home kit. The image has been going round for the last couple of transfer windows, and for many non-Stoke fans they are left in shock at what they think is a great signing. Just to be clear, Kagawa isn’t signing.
16:30 – Sad news for some, as Phillip Wollscheid is confirmed to have left the club, signing for Wolfsburg on a season long loan.
16:35 – But as one goes out, another comes in! Bruno Martins Indi has completed a loan move to The Potters from Porto, with an option to sign permanently at the end of the season! A brilliant signing for us, make sure to catch of piece on him in a moment!
17:00 – This news was reported on Twitter a few hours ago, but this is the first I’ve seen of it. Apparently, Marc Muniesa is attracting attention from Real Betis (who he was linked to late last night) and Granada. This transfer would be very odd to me, as the left-back position is pretty weak at the moment. Erik Pieters is having a torrid start to the season, and Muniesa is the only real back-up for that position (presuming that Martins Indi will be our first choice CB). To let Muniesa go without any left back cover would be stupid on our part, so I don’t see this one going through. And besides, Muniesa is one of the biggest personalities in the club, and is very much a fan-favourite. His influence was enough for Bojan to sign for the club, and it would be a shame to see that bromance be torn apart. And finally, he is the main part in one of our only creative songs, we’ve already lost Moha so we can’t lose anymore players towards that chant! In all seriousness, it would be a real shame to see Muniesa leave the club, but with game time at a minimum at the moment, you could understand why he would want to leave.
19:40 – Not a marquee signing, but a signing nonetheless. Stoke have announced the signing of Cameron McJannett from Luton Town for the Academy. McJannett has signed a three-year contract, and will hopefully improve our ever-growing youth side.
18:00 – With all the buzz around Deadline Day, Peter Crouch has updated us that he will not be leaving The Potters, as his there was a technical fault with his chopper. Always the comedian!
18:15 – Looks like that could be it for this transfer window, at least that’s what BBC Sports @juliette_grace seems to think. She says she doesn’t see any more incomings for Stoke by the sounds of listening to chief executive Tony Scholes.
If that is it, then we have ended on a high, but still with areas that need looking at. Bony and Martins Indi are just the type of top players we needed, but that left back position is still worrying, especially with rumours of Muniesa being targeted by other teams.
18:45 – Although we’re led to believe that there would be no more players incoming, nothing was said about players leaving. One player whose future hung in the balance was Jakob Haugaard. The Danish keeper was apparently ready to be loaned out, especially after the signing of Lee Grant from Derby. However, Haugaard doesn’t believe we will be leaving on loan just yet. In an interview with bold.dk, he said he doesn’t believe that the signing of Grant affects he position at the club too much, as he was brought in because both he and Butland are holding (or in his case had) injuries, so Given was the only keeper truly available. He did however say that the opportunity of a loan has been brought up in the past, but he does not believe he will be leaving this transfer window.
19:45 – Most people have come to realise that we aren’t going to sign anyone else this window. There is however, some hope, though it is very small. According to @StuartJamesGNM, Stoke are prepared to move for Berahino if he becomes available in the final hours. But it is viewed as highly unlikely, as they have had no encouragement from West Brom. Personally, I think this one is lost. I still have slight hope that we might somehow pull this off, but if it was to happen, it would be right down to the wire.
Overall we can be pleased with this transfer window I believe, as although we left it late, we finally got what we were looking for, a striker and a centre-back. Add Joe Allen and Marko Arnautovic signing a new contract to the equation, and it looks even better.
We’d like to firstly thank you for the support you’ve shown to this! It has been a lot of hard effort, but ultimately it has payed off, as in two successive days we’ve broken our views record for a day. We’ve enjoyed doing this for you guys, and hopefully we’ll be able to continue to bring you the best content throughout the season!
