Glenn Whelan joined Stoke late in the January window of the 2007/08 season from Sheffield Wednesday for £500,000 and has more recently signed a contract extension.

The Irishman made his debut as a late substitute for Mamady Sidibe against Cardiff City. His first goal came in April of that season when Stoke were defeated 2-1 by Crystal Palace.

He became a regular after forcing his way back into the team in the first Premier League season and was a key part of the spine that saw the club remain in the league.

Whelan has scored a few vital goals for the club. He scored the equaliser in the last minute at Villa Park when the Potters fought back from 2-0 to draw 2-2 while he was the match winner against Tottenham at White Hart Lane in 2009/10.

On January 1 2011 Whelan made his 100th appearance for the club. Under Hughes he has been instrumental playing in a central defensive midfield role and was arguably player of the season in the Potters 2013/14 campaign.
