Butland joined Stoke on a four and a half year contract in January 2013 for a fee, which could rise to £3.5 million. Part of the clause when he joined was that he was loaned straight back to Birmingham to finish the season.

January 1 2014 against Everton Butland replaced injured Thomas Sorensen at half time to make his Stoke City debut. It was the next league game he made his first full start in a 5-3 debut to Liverpool.

Following the recovery of both Asmir Begovic and Thomas Sorensen, the 21 year old was loaned out to Leeds. In October 2014 he joined Derby on a one-month loan before coming back to Stoke and sitting on the bench behind Begovic.

He made his England Under 21 debut on September 1 2011 against Azerbaijan and is likely to be the first choice keeper in the upcoming European Under 21 Championships. Also more recently he has captained the Under 21 side under Gareth Southgate’s leadership.

With the deparutre of Asmir Begovic to Chelsea in the summer of 2015, Butland earned the number one shirt and is set to be given the spell in the first team that he’s been craving for the good of his career.
